Slavonian Grebe

Podiceps auritus

Finding three pairs of Slavonian Grebes on one small northern lake was a wonderful surprise. One pair was already settled on a nest, while the other two were still busy with their courtship, giving us a rare opportunity to watch a whole range of behaviours over several days.

The nest was tucked into a narrow channel, bringing the birds surprisingly close to us and allowing some excellent photographic opportunities. We spent a few very rewarding days simply sitting and watching, following their movements and interactions and waiting for those brief moments when their character really came through.

Their behaviour was remarkably familiar. In many ways, they reminded us of the Great Crested Grebes we know so well from home — the courtship, the interactions between pairs, and the careful attention given to the nest. Yet the setting was completely different, and seeing these beautiful birds going about their lives in such unfamiliar surroundings made the experience all the more special.
