Rock Ptarmigan

The Rock Ptarmigan is one of my favourite Icelandic birds, and not just because of its striking appearance. I absolutely love their call — it is such a distinctive sound and one that I was particularly hoping to hear during our trip.

We were lucky enough to find several during our travels, and the males were certainly not difficult to spot! Their beautiful white plumage stood out against the darker rocks and landscape, making them visible from quite a distance. They really did seem to be standing out a mile.

Watching the males moving through the rugged Icelandic landscape was a wonderful experience. Their brilliant white feathers looked almost out of place against the dark volcanic rocks, yet somehow they seemed perfectly suited to this wild environment.

And then there was that wonderful call. Hearing a Rock Ptarmigan calling across the open landscape, with the bird standing proudly in full view, was one of those simple but memorable moments that made our Iceland trip so special.
