Shore Larks—known as Horned Larks in many parts of the world—are striking little winter visitors to the UK, arriving from Scandinavia and the Arctic to feed along our shingle beaches, dunes, and saltmarsh edges. With only a small number reaching our shores each year, seeing one is always something special. Their delicate markings and charismatic little black “horns,” which stand up like tiny tufts on their heads, make them a favourite target for winter photography trips. They may be challenging to approach, but when a Shore Lark finally steps into view, the moment is incredibly rewarding.
