Iceland – May 2026
At the end of May 2026, we travelled to Iceland for a trip we had been looking forward to for a long time. We were incredibly lucky with the weather, with beautiful conditions for most of our stay, allowing us to explore much of the country at our own pace.
Over the course of the trip, we travelled through the south as far as Vestrahorn, then explored the Snæfellsnes Peninsula before continuing north, eventually reaching the wonderful Lake Mývatn area.
Iceland is an extraordinary country for anyone who loves birds and wild places. The birdlife is everywhere, often in places where you least expect it, and there always seemed to be something new to discover. You could be driving along a quiet road, turn a corner, and suddenly find yourself looking at a bird you had hoped to see.
The landscapes are just as impressive. Huge mountains, volcanic scenery, black beaches, waterfalls and endless open spaces create a feeling of peace and isolation that is difficult to describe. There were many moments when we simply stopped and took it all in.
For us, though, it was the combination of the scenery and the birds that made Iceland so special. We never quite knew what the next stop, or even the next corner, might bring — and that sense of discovery stayed with us throughout the trip.
